The latest Facebook meme-for-a-cause has people replacing their profile pictures with photos of their favorite cartoon characters, supposedly to boost awareness of violence against children. But where did it come from?

The most common form of the meme spreading on Facebook contains the following message, which has been reported at least since December 1:

"Change your Facebook profile picture to a cartoon from your childhood and invite your friends to do the same. Until Monday (December 6), there should be no human faces on Facebook, but a stash of memories. This is for eliminating violence against children."

However, a cursory search reveals that there are no large-scale events or anniversaries related to violence against children within that time frame.

According to meme tracking site KnowYourMeme, a strikingly similar meme went viral just a week before, carrying the message:

"From the 16th to the 20th of November, we shall change our profile pictures to our favourite cartoon characters. The purpose of this game is to remove all photos of humans for a few days from Facebook"

There was no civic cause linked to the original meme.

KnowYourMeme reported that the meme was written originally in Greek, but the original source is still unknown. The original meme was also picked up by the news website The Huffington Post and social media metrics company AllFacebook.com.

It is still unclear who "hijacked" or appropriated the meme to denounce violence against children, or why that particular cause was chosen in the first place.

"Maybe the person who started to include 'elimination of violence against children' on this status Facebook game had a hard time convincing his/her friends to change their profile pictures and so added something that would probably encourage them to support a good cause so as to continue the game," opined Filipina blogger Rio Encarnado.

"One blogger noted this is driven mainly by Facebook, while others pointed to the direction of the United Nations Children’s Fund or Unicef," noted Erwin Oliva, country editor for Yahoo! Philippines.

In any case, the meme has been accepted positively by Filipino netizens.

"Not everyone knows the origin of this campaign, but a lot have participated not only because it's fun but because they want to show their support that they are against child abuse," Encarnado concluded on her blog.

"It is clear that the situation [of] violence against children and child labor will not be reversed by putting cartoon pictures on Facebook, [but it] is a way of promoting social awareness to take further actions to change the situation," added blogger Adrian Rosales.

"It doesn't actually help. Naisip ko din yun nun una. (That's also what I thought at first). But I realized that the cartoon thing is just a campaign to raise awareness of the things that are happening. It only shows that we don't live in apathy. When we become aware, we can think of ways to help," Judith Clemente noted on Facebook.

Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. Six movies after young wizard Harry Potter first enrolled at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry we have Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the two-part epic finale of what is now the most financially successful film franchise of all time.

The decision to split the last Harry Potter into two - a tactic studios are employing more and more these days, with the last of The Twilight Saga, to name just one, following suit - is both a good and bad thing for fans. It's good because it means more of the mammoth Deathly Hallows book can be transferred to the big-screen over the space of two movies. But while this may please fans, the fact that we'll have to wait until next summer to see Part 2 will surely be frustrating, even if it does help build up anticipation.

So is Deathly Hallows Part 1 as epic as it has been made out to be? Does it start off a fitting conclusion to the franchise? Well, yes and no.

Firstly, most things fans retun to the Harry Potter films time and time again for are to be found here. Plenty of magical spells, exciting set pieces, extraordinary situations for our young trio of heroes face up against once more and just generally getting to spend time with these beloved characters.

The main trouble with Deathly Hallows Part 1 is that it doesn't feel entirely like its own film. It's extremely evident that this is just one part of a bigger story broken off and displayed on its own. Most of the time it feels less occupied with making itself standalone and more like "Wait till you see Part 2!" It feels very much like a precursor to the hopefully epic conclusion and although that may work fine when that conclusion has still to be released but in the long-term it's going to hurt the movie's own sense of identity, or lack thereof.

Another problem Part 1 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has is that there's a long stretch in the middle of the film where little actually happens, at least in terms of the usual magical, spectacle-filled set pieces we've come to know and love about the franchise. For a long stretch of time we follow Harry, Ron and Hermione on the run, hiding in the woods from Lord Voldemort and his legion of followers, out of the safe and familiar confines of Hogwarts (we never actually visit the school in the entire film). Although this allows for certain issues and themes that have been bubbling under the surface for a long time to finally rear their heads - not to mention give the three main actors a chance to actually act - it does make it a lot less engaging than a few of the others films. "Oh, just get on with it!" was a thought that crossed my mind on more than one occasion.

Anak SMP. Pagi buta si anak smp mengemas bukunya dan memasukannya kedalam tas mungilnya. Tugas dari sekolah telah di kerjakannya dini hari tadi. Di pagi yang masih dingin karena musim hujan telah tiba, tak mematahkan semangatnya untuk mengais ilmu demi masa depannya kelak. Anak SMP seperti biasa menghabiskan roti dan secangkir susu yang telah di siapkan ibundanya di atas meja. Tanpa tergesa gesa menikmati sarapan paginya dengan nikmatnya.

Perjalanan dari rumah ke sekolah sudah biasa dilakukannya setiap pagi sampai siang datang menjemputnya. Anak SMP serasa tak memiliki beban mengikuti pelajaran yang diajarkan oleh gurunya. Dia bukan satu satunya anak SMP, namun masih banyak anak SMP yang sedang melakukan rutinitas seperti yang dilakukannya saat ini. Saking banyaknya sehingga bangku sekolahpun tak cukup menanmpung sekumpulan Anak SMP. Hingga beberapa dari mereka terpaksa dengan keterpaksaan dan ketidak mampuan membayar biaya sekolah yang katanya mahal. Dan katanya Ilmu Itu Mahal. Nasip anak anak yang seharusnya saat ini duduk mengenyam pendidikan di tingkat SMP terpaksa dengan keterpaksaannya tak dapat diraih. Kata orang "Raihlah ilmu sampai kenegeri China" namun itu berlaku bagi mereka yang mampu. Anak SMP yang seharusnya menyandang status sebagai pelajar anak sekolah mengengah pertama tertinnggal dengan sia sia karena kehidupan memojokannya untuk tidak dapat bersekolah. Inilah anak smp, Anak SMP dan Anak SMP.

Dengan berbangga diri tanpa meminta belas kasihan, lanjutkan hidup meski tidak mendapat kesempatan mengenyaam masa masa SMP. Mungkin Tuhan tidak menempatkanmu melewati masa masa itu, dimana masa lugu, kelucuan, canda dan tawa semasa duduk di SMP, namun inilah jalan Nya. Dibalik itu semua pasti ada sebuah rahasia ilahi selama engkau menuruti dan menelusuri jalan terbentang didepan yang telah Tuhan rencanakan untuk mu. TIPS menemukan bug menurut kesimpulan gw:
- bug itu ada di objek yg ada pada suatu map.(dalam hal ini brati tembok/lantai ga isa..inget ini pengertianku duank..)
- map itu pada dasarnya cuma batas tembok/udara(tidak bisa dilewati/dilompati) dan alasnya datar..
jadi miringan pada lantai,tangga,mobil itu termasuk obyek!
- buat nemuin bug itu ada banyak cara.. coba2 aja..kalo bisa kadang geter2 brati udah mendekati/emg ga bisa..
kalo udah mumet pencet asal2an aja jongkok,lompat,gerak2 kamera kemana2 pencet2 WASD..!
- semua bug yang ada itu ga perlu pake piso..jadi ga usah piso2 brisik!

Earthquake Moved California City 31 Inches. Yahoo news - The powerful earthquake that struck Baja California and the southwestern United States in April actually moved an entire California border city, NASA radar images show.

Calexico, Calif., near the U.S.-Mexico border, moved as much as 2 1/2 feet (80 cm) south and down into the ground due to the magnitude-7.2 earthquake on April 4.

Called the El Mayor-Cucapah earthquake, the temblor was centered 32 miles (52 km) south-southeast of Calexico and was the strongest quake to strike the region in nearly 120 years. Two people were killed and hundreds more were injured.

Shaking and moving

It's not the first time a town has moved. The massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Chile earlier this year moved the city of Concepción at least 10 feet (3 meters) to the west. That quake was the fifth most powerful temblor in recorded history.

Another example of how quakes move as well as shake: In the 6.9-magnitude 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, which occurred along the San Andreas Fault in southern California, the Pacific plate moved 6.2 feet (about 2 m) to the northwest and 4.3 feet (1.3 m) upward over the North American plate.

Over the long run, earthquakes and shifting fault lines remake the planet. The slip-sliding motion of the San Andreas fault causes San Francisco to move toward Los Angeles at the rate of about 2 inches a year - the same pace at which your fingernails grow. The cities will meet in several million years. (California won't fall into the sea, however.)

Powerful earthquakes can also shift the Earth's axis, changing the length of our planet's days. The Chile quake, for example, shortened the length of an Earth day by 1.26 microseconds.

NASA discovered Calexico's comparatively short move by making radar sweeps over the quake-affected region in a Gulfstream-III jet outfitted for science flights.

The aircraft flew 41,000 feet (12,496 meters) above the fault system responsible for the earthquake and recorded how the quake deformed the Earth's surface using the Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR) developed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

"UAVSAR's unprecedented resolution is allowing scientists to see fine details of the Baja earthquake's fault system activated by the main quake and its aftershocks," said JPL's Scott Hensley, UAVSAR principal investigator at JPL, in a statement. "Such details aren't visible with other sensors." [Radar image of shifted earth]

The biggest land shift caused by the April 4 earthquake was also about 10 feet (3 m). But that occurred well south of the Mexican border, beyond the reach of NASA's airborne radar flight campaign. Radar instruments on Japanese and European satellites, however, managed to record those effects, researchers said.

NASA has been using the radar system to map the San Andreas fault system in California from San Francisco to the Mexico border since spring 2009. The April 4 quake observations came during a campaign that ran between October 2009 and April 13, project officials said.

"The goal of the ongoing study is to understand the relative hazard of the San Andreas and faults to its west like the Elsinore and San Jacinto faults, and capture ground displacements from larger quakes," explained JPL geophysicist Andrea Donnellan, who leads the UAVSAR project to track seismic hazards in Southern California.

The El Mayor-Cucapah earthquake caused substantial damage when it struck. Since then, there have been thousands of aftershocks along related fault lines, including a magnitude-5.7 one on the Elsinore fault on June 14.

NASA researchers are currently working to determine how far north the fault rupture that caused the quake may have reached.

"Continued measurements of the region should tell us whether the main fault rupture has moved north over time," Donnellan said.

‘Captain America’ Casts Toby Jones To Play The Villain Zola

Joe Johnston isn’t settling for one villain in his upcoming Marvel Studios comic book adaptation, Captain America. The director has grabbed Toby Jones to play a second baddie, named Arnim Zola.

Zola was an evil biochemist during World War II,who figured out a way to take everything about a person’s mental signature and basically burn them into a cloned brain. His work was sometimes funded by Red Skull, who was the first villain cast in Captain America, to be played by Hugo Weaving (Lord of the Rings, The Matrix).

Zola’s desire to play God was put to use for none other than Adolf Hitler, whose brain patterns were imprinted onto what became Hate-Monger so that Hitler could live on in the event of his own death. He even burned himself into his own new body, which looks similar the body that Krang from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles walked around in, only more robotic.

Jones is a great character actor who few know but many would recognize one way or another. His best performance perhaps came in Infamous, where he played Truman Capote. Aside from that, he was also in Stephen King’s The Mist, W., and Frost/Nixon. And if you don’t recognize him from those movies, everyone should recognize his voice as being the same as Dobby the House Elf from the Harry Potter series of films.

Apparently the movie is also no longer called The First Avenger: Captain America. Now it’s called Captain America: The First Avenger. Seriously, movie people? Can we just pick a damn title and stick with it? In a few months, you’re just going to realize that a sub-title doesn’t always sound cool, and that Captain America alone is the easiest to latch onto, so why not just start with that instead of playing musical chairs?

Captain America will be released on July 22, 2011.

David Starr Jordan High School teacher Amy Victoria Beck is scheduled to be dragged in Burbank Superior Court on four counts today is not valid and one count of oral copulation sex with someone under the age of 16 years.

Celebrate the Nun and The Loop

In 1986 H. P. Baxxter and Rick J. Jordan met in Hanover, Germany through a small ad and founded the new wave band Celebrate The Nun. The band released two albums, Meanwhile (1989) and Continuous (1991), and five singles. Slin Tompson left the band in 1990 to start a project on his own. Lead vocals were done by Baxxter and female vocals were delivered by Baxxter's sister Britt Maxime.[3] Not finding the expected success in the new wave arena Baxxter kept working at the former Hamburg based Indie label (currently Edel Records) in distribution and sales where he met Scooter's future manager Jens Thele.[4] Soon afterwards, in late 1993, the former Celebrate the Nun members joined up with Baxxter's cousin Ferris Bueller under the management of Jens Thele to form a remix team known as The Loop. The Loop became one of the top remix teams in Germany, releasing remixes for artists like Adeva, Holly Johnson, The Tag Team, RuPaul, and Marky Mark feat. Prince Ital Joe.[5]

Scooter started as a project in 1994. Their debut single "Vallée De Larmes" (French for Valley of Tears) reached #8 on the German official dance chart. In April, Scooter played their first live show at "The Palladium" in Hamburg. At that point, Scooter officially switched from being a project into a band, and Baxxter's "rapping" became one of the band's trademarks.

At first, "Hyper Hyper" was expected to be a small hit within the club scene, but it became a platinum record, selling 700,000 units,[4][6] eventually reaching number 2 on Germany's Media Control single chart. Scooter's third single "Move Your Ass" reached number 3 within Media Control's single chart after a few weeks of its release. The follow-up singles, "Friends" and "Endless Summer", occupied similar positions.

The band maintained the initial technique of their sound throughout their second album, Our Happy Hardcore, until the style became noticeably different with their 1996 single "I'm Raving" (from the 3rd album Wicked) as the tempos were down to 138 BPM from their previous tempos which were between the range of 160 and 190 BPM. The single got gold certification, reaching no. 4 in Germany.

Scooter's fourth album, Age of Love, went gold, selling 250,000 units within four weeks of its release.

In 1998, Ferris Bueller (Soren Buehler) left the group to pursue a solo career, and was replaced by DJ Axel Coon, who had been working with the band at the recording studio for some time already. Scooter released one of their memorable singles "How Much is the Fish?" which charted at #3, selling over 300,000 units and becoming another gold single. Their fifth album, No Time to Chill, reached the number 4 position on the Media Control album chart.

In July 1999, "Faster Harder Scooter", Scooter's first single from their sixth album, Back to the Heavyweight Jam, reached number 7 at home. "Back to the Heavyweight Jam", "Fuck the Millennium", band members' use of aliases and the spoken intro to "Fuck the Millenium" all heavily reference The KLF, who pioneered the concept of live crowd samples as part of their stadium house concept and White Room album.

Scooter released their seventh album, Sheffield, in May 2000. Sheffield took another new direction including 6/8 rhythms on tracks "Don't Gimme the Funk" and "Sex Dwarf". In late 2000, after their second single "She's the Sun," Scooter were awarded a Comet at the 2000 VIVA Comet Awards in the "Most Successful Dance Act" category.

The band's 21st single, "Posse (I Need You on the Floor)," was the first Scooter single since "Endless Summer" to include a high-pitched-voice in the chorus. Their eighth album, We Bring the Noise, released in June 2001, included another single, "Aiii Shot the DJ." A limited edition version of the album included a cover of the 1978 City song "Am Fenster" as a bonus track.

In December 2001, Scooter released their 23rd single "Ramp! (The Logical Song)" from the compilation album Push The Beat For This Jam. The single shipped over 200,000 units in Germany and went gold in many countries as well as platinum in Australia, Norway, and the United Kingdom, where 407,000 copies of the single were sold.

At the beginning of 2002, the band released their second Best Of album titled Push the Beat for this Jam (The Singles 98-02). Coon left the band to pursue a solo career in DJing and remixing, and Jay Frog became the new DJ.

As a quick way of introducing the new member Frog to their fans, the trio released a second compilation album in November 2002, 24 Carat Gold. Scooter's 24th single, "Nessaja" was a cover version of the title track from Peter Maffay's musical Tabaluga, and debuted at number one on the German official single charts.

Scooter enjoyed a comeback within the UK charts, with 6 top 20 UK singles "The Logical Song" (UK #2), "Nessaja" (UK #4), "Posse (I Need You On The Floor)" (UK #15), "Weekend!" (UK #12), "The Night" (UK #16) and "Maria (I Like It Loud)" (UK #16) all charting within an 18 month period.[7]

In 2003, the video for "Weekend!" caused a scandal with its scenes of topless dancers. The song reached number 2 on the German Media Control single chart.

In March 2003, Scooter released their next studio album, The Stadium Techno Experience. The album climbed to number 7 on the Media Control album chart. The single "The Night" became the last to feature the high pitched voice effect and reached the Top 10 in Germany. The next single from the album, "Maria (I Like It Loud)", was released in collaboration with hardcore producers Marc Acardipane and Dick Rules, reaching number 4 on the single charts.

Mind The Gap was Scooter's 10th studio album, released in three different versions: basic, regular and deluxe. The 28th single, "Shake That!" flavored with 70s disco sound was released on 4 October in most European countries, entering the German Media Control single chart at number 8 and gaining Gold certification in the Czech Republic.[8]

Their 11th studio album, Who's Got the Last Laugh Now?, featured a cover version of "Everlasting Love." The Who's Got The Last Laugh Now? 2006 tour was followed by the release of both the CD and the 2-disc DVD entitled Excess All Areas, one of the DVDs containing the final Hamburg concert of the tour and the second containing every music video released so far.

On August 14, 2006, it was announced that Jay Frog had decided to leave the band to pursue a solo career. Frog was replaced by Michael Simon, who had remixed some of Scooter's tracks while in search of success with his "Shahin & Simon" project. On August 19, Scooter played at the Tufertschwil Open Air in Switzerland, where Simon debuted.

The single "Behind the Cow" was premiered at The Dome 40 in Düsseldorf on December 1, 2006, and was released on January 19, 2007. The song and its lyrics are based on "What Time Is Love?" by The KLF. Their 12th album The Ultimate Aural Orgasm, which includes the songs "The United Vibe" (cover version of Den Harrow's "Catch the Fox"), "Scarborough Affair" or "The Shit That Killed Elvis" (collaboration with Jimmy Pop, the frontman of American fun-rock-band The Bloodhound Gang), was released on February 9, 2007. The second single release of The Ultimate Aural Orgasm was "Lass Uns Tanzen" which appeared in stores on March 23.

On August 10, Scooter released a new single called "The Question is What is the Question", the release of which surprised many of their fans as they were expecting a third single from the current album rather than new material. The band released a jumpstyle cover version of classic 70's track "How Do You Do" by Mouth & MacNeal. Scooter released their 13th studio album, Jumping All Over the World, on 30 November 2007, containing all three singles ("The Question is What is the Question", "And No Matches" and "Jumping All Over the World"). A limited edition of the album contains a bonus CD including all Scooter's German top ten hits, from "Hyper, Hyper" to "How Much Is The Fish?" as well as a previously unreleased version of "The Question Is What Is The Question?"[9]

In November 2007, the band made its debut tour of Australia, never having visited the country before despite a #1 single there (The Logical Song) some 6 years earlier. Scooter performed at the famous Scattered rave party in Sydney as well as in Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth.

In March 2008, the group embarked on its first arena tour of the UK as part of Clubland Live, appearing alongside other All Around The World acts such as Cascada and Ultrabeat. During this tour, Scooter performed a retooled version of "I'm Lonely" from Jumping All Over The World; the single was released in Germany on 18 April 2008. "The Question Is What Is The Question" was released in the UK the same week, charting at number 49. The band made international news in May 2008 when Jumping All Over The World unexpectedly entered at number 1 on the UK Albums Chart, replacing Madonna's album Hard Candy after just one week[10][11] It is Scooter's first number 1 in the UK and first album release there in five years.

February 2009 saw the release of a Scooter tribute album entitled Hands On Scooter, featuring artists such as The Bloodhound Gang, Status Quo, and Sido covering or sampling Scooter songs.[12]

During the summer of 2009, Scooter announced their next studio album, Under The Radar Over The Top. On August 14, 2009, Scooter released "J'adore Hardcore", the first single from Under The Radar Over The Top. "J'adore Hardcore" was based on Planet Funk's "Chase the Sun" and The Pitcher's "I Just Can't Stop.".[13] On July 30, 2009, during the video shoot for "J'adore Hardcore," Baxxter was almost a victim of a car bomb attack in Majorca, Spain.[14] Michael Simon reported that Baxxter was alright and it was a very near miss. For their next single, single, "Ti Sento", Scooter collaborated with Italian singer Antonella Ruggiero. Ti Sento became a hit in Germany, and was released the day Under The Radar Over The Top was released. During the first week of sales, Under The Radar Over The Top appeared 2nd on the German charts. Ti Sento appeared as a number 11 hit on German charts the same week and peaked at 10 the following week. It was confirmed on November 3rd that The Sound Above My Hair would be the third single from the album. The video premiered on YouTube on the 12th of November. The single was released on November 27.

The "Under The Radar Over The Top" Tour was announced before the album was released. Originally, the tour was only to be a week long through several German cities such as Hamburg, Berlin, and Leipzig and one Swiss city, Zurich, throughout March 2010 . This is expected to be followed up with dates in more countries for the rest of the year.

On February 9, 2010 it was announced that Scooter will have the official song of the 2010 ice hockey world championships. This song will be Stuck On Replay, it will be released as the 4th single on the March 12, 2010 but a reworked single version not the album version. Source Wiki.

With bypass or angioplasty, patients often need another procedure years down the road because arteries often reclog.

"It's not unexpected" for Clinton to need another procedure now, said Dr. Clyde Yancy, cardiologist at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas and president of the American Heart Association.

The sections of arteries and veins used to create detours around the original blockages tend to develop clogs five to 10 years after a bypass, he explained. New blockages also can develop in new areas.

"This kind of disease is progressive. It's not a one-time event, so it really points out the need for constant surveillance" and treating risk factors such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure, he said.

Facebook “Unnamed” App is NOT Spyware

There’s been yet another fuss on Facebook today about an Un-named application in your profile, slowing down Facebook.

ALERT >>>>> Has your facebook been running slow lately? Go to “Settings” and select “application settings”, change the dropdown box to “added to profile”. If you see one in there called “un named app” delete it… Its an internal spybot. Pass it on. about a minute ago….i checked and it was on mine.

Indeed, some people have deleted the unnamed application and their FB sessions seem to have speeded up.

Alan Davies has posted information which I am going to quote verbatim in an effort to get this info to as many people as possible:

it is NOT a virus or spyware, it is your “Boxes” tab, and Facebook is going to be getting rid of it soon, you can remove it yourself from your edit applications list if you want… not sure if Facebook will be replacing it with something else yet

Please also be aware that when searching for this on Google I ended up at a page which wil tell you that your pc needs a scan (this is malware/spyware). So please be careful, it seems that whoever started this facebook “status” is just trying to get people googling and direct you to this harmful page.

So, remove it if you must but it may well screw up something that Facebook is working on for the future. Also, take note of the second paragraph in the quote above, NOT clicking that link is even more important than removing the unnamed app.

Google Voice comes to iPhone

FCC investigation be damned, Google has finally managed to bypass the App Store and release Google Voice to the iPhone (and webOS, too) the same way it pulled off Latitude, i.e. via a HTML5-based web app. According to Senior Product Manager Vincent Paquet, it should work with any HTML5-compliant device, although the formatting at this point has been tailored to Apple and Palm's platforms. So here's how it works: much like with its mobile Gmail site, the app caches your contacts list in a browser page. All the usual GV functionality is there, writing SMS messages, checking your inbox, and even listening to voicemails (although that latter functionality wasn't working for us yet in our trials). Placing phone calls is an interesting trick: as pictured above, after you choose the recipient, the app prompts you to call one of Google's local numbers via the native dialer -- even for international calls, hence the lower rates by paying through Google. The recipient will see your proper GV digits, and upside with this method is you'll still be able to utilize call waiting and background usage. The catch, of course, is a call history littered with random numbers. It's not a perfect solution by any means -- if anything, take solace in an assortment of home screen icons for each section of the app -- but it's probably the best we're gonna get for the time being. The page should be up and running later today, so if you're anxious, direct your mobile browser to voice.google.com and just keep hitting refresh.

Homes evacuated in San Antonio as hill crumbles

SAN ANTONIO – Construction crews moved dirt to shore up a group of houses precariously perched on a crumbling hill in San Antonio on Monday as engineers tried to determine why the land below was shifting, causing dozens of homes to evacuate.

Gaping crevices, some 15 feet deep, cut across several yards as dirt cascaded into a towering stone retaining wall that nearly split in half. Fences crumpled like accordions as crews packed dirt under one home and around its exterior after part of its foundation was exposed.

One soil expert said the cause of the landslide appeared to be the result of poor retaining wall design, and a city official said the nearly 1,000-foot-long wall in the upper-middle class neighborhood of sprawling two-story homes was built without a permit.

No one has been injured, but about 80 homes were evacuated on Sunday after a resident in the northwest side subdivision reported that his backyard was sliding down hill. By Monday afternoon, residents in about 55 of those homes were allowed to return after inspections and soil monitoring found them to be safe, said Valerie Dolenga, a spokeswoman for Pulte Homes Inc., the parent company of the neighborhood's builder, Centex Homes.

One neighbor who was among the first homebuyers in the subdivision set among rolling hills on the outskirts of San Antonio said he was initially told no homes would be built on the crumbling ridge because it was too steep.

Romeo Peart, 32, said one retaining wall failed several years ago before the current one was built and homes were constructed above it.

"They can keep the view now," Peart said, shaking his head as heavy equipment stuffed dirt beneath an exposed foundation. "And they paid an extra $10,000 for those lots."

The development, which was started in 2004, has nearly 750 homes with others under construction. The neighborhood, with houses selling for $250,000, is one dozens that have sprung up on hilly former ranch land as San Antonio grew to be the nation's seventh largest city.

The near-vertical retaining wall likely failed under the weight of the area's clay soil that readily expands when drenched with heavy precipitation as it was last week, said Sazzad Bin-Shafique, an assistant engineering professor and soil expert at the University of Texas-San Antonio who went out to the site on Monday. Steep, tall retaining walls can hold up if built correctly, he said.

"It's safe, honestly. We have engineering solutions, but sometimes we do something because we want to reduce costs," Bin-Shafique said. "Many times, it will be OK, but sometimes, it will not."

Roderick Sanchez, the city's planning and development director, said the builder built the retaining wall without a permit. The city was still waiting for verification that the wall was designed by a certified engineer and built to specifications, Sanchez said.

Dolenga said the city approved construction plans for the subdivision including the retaining wall, though she said the company was investigating the permit allegation. She said she didn't know if the street with the now-jeopardized homes was added later to the subdivision's plans, though developments are usually built in phases.

"We've been building out there a long time. This is an unusual circumstance," she said.

Engineers spent Monday assessing each of the structures in the evacuated area, while fire officials escorted some families to retrieve belongings from the neighborhood. At least seven homes would likely remain vacant for an extended period, said Fire District Chief Nim Kidd, who is also the head of the city's emergency management office.

Kenny Crawford, 32, asked fire officials to be allowed to retrieve his car and some belongings on Monday, but because his home is directly below the disintegrating wall, he and his girlfriend were told it was too dangerous.

"They really haven't given us any info," Crawford said. "We don't know what's going to happen. Of course, property values are going to fall."

Dolenga said geologists and engineers were looking for a cause of the slide and monitoring for any additional movement of the dirt that was sliding at a rate of 4-inches-an-hour on Sunday. She did not know if there was additional movement on Monday.

Utilities were cut off in the area, and construction crews were moving dirt to shore up the homes on the hill and to protect those below the retaining wall.

Resident Lakeika James, 41, said she had noticed odd noises over the three years she has lived in her house.

"I would hear, laying in my bed at night, grumbling and vibrations. A few nails popped out lately," she said.

She said she hadn't planned on staying in the house long-term, and now after the landslide, the mother of a 5-year-old girl wants out.

"I'm just going to be uncomfortable and worried for my family," she said.

Earthquake & Tsunami Strikes Again Potentially Happen in Sumatra

Indonesia has experienced the earthquake and tsunami in Aceh and surrounding areas. Similar to the earthquake and tsunami that killed many people like the December 26, 2004 incident could happen again in Sumatra. And the earthquake shook the new Padang last year. AVENGED SEVENFOLD Drummer Found Dead - Dec. 28, 2009

According to The Orange County Register, AVENGED SEVENFOLD drummer James Owen Sullivan (aka The Rev) was found dead at his home on Monday (December 28). He was 28 years old.

Sullivan appears to have died of natural causes, Huntington Beach police Lt. John Domingo told The Orange County Register. Police were told by the firemen who had responded to Sullivan's house around 1 am, according to the report.

Sullivan survived by his wife, Leana MacFadden.

In addition to playing drums for AVENGED SEVENFOLD, The Rev was a productive songwriter, has contributed the song "A Little Piece of Heaven" (see video below) to the band's fourth studio CD, 2007's "Avenged Sevenfold".

"The Rev is very good that comes with the full song," singer M. Shadows said that in the year 2007 interview with Revolver magazine. "The man was a job; badass he was and he was a great writer. He walked in with 'A Little Piece of Heaven", and it was like eight minutes of the film which he wrote and has been in the brain; no one in the recorder - he had just entered , one-finger on the piano, playing the drums on it, and said, 'That's the song. Let us bring some people in the string to work on string arrangements. "And we were like," Fuck yeah, dude! "

"I can write in any style I choose," the Rev said in the same interview. "And I was always very influenced by Danny Elfman, OINGO Boingo, MR. Bungle, and bands like that.
